Olin College of Engineering has received a three-year, $ 150,160 grant from the Davis Educational Foundation to support innovative faculty development modules that will improve teaching and learning by returning faculty to the classroom to experience Olin’s state-of-the-art engineering curriculum firsthand.

Olin faculty will offer short, intensive versions of foundational Olin courses to their faculty colleagues, most of whom have graduated from institutions with traditional pedagogical approaches. Participants will be able to experience Olin’s core and flagship courses as students do, improving their own delivery of courses across the curriculum. Each module instructor will be paired with an “educational partner,” an Olin faculty member who has done research in curricular effectiveness, providing another level of insight into improving student learning.

“These modules will allow Olin’s faculty to better understand what is taught in the core classes at Olin,” said Caitrin Lynch, an associate professor of anthropology at Olin who will direct the program. “Furthermore, these modules will allow faculty members to experience a variety of pedagogical approaches and develop a deep understanding of why these approaches improve learning. By incorporating conversations in educational theory, this program will make teaching and learning at Olin even more effective.”

Up to six of Olin’s flagship courses will be offered in mini-versions through the program. Included will be Design Nature, a required course for Olin first-year students in which students develop bio-inspired ideas into functional prototypes; the Stuff of History, a popular interdisciplinary elective combining history and materials science; and Modeling and Simulation of the Physical World, a project-based core course that is an introduction to mathematical modeling and computer simulation of physical systems. The modules will be offered summers and during the winter intersession break, and will begin in 2012.

The grant was received from the Davis Educational Foundation established by Stanton and Elisabeth Davis after Mr. Davis’s retirement as chairman of Shaw’s Supermarkets. It is the second grant Olin has received from the foundation. An earlier grant also supported faculty development and pedagogical innovation.

In its short history, Olin has become widely known in engineering education circles for its innovative, hands-on curriculum that blends rigorous instruction in engineering fundamentals with study in the liberal arts and entrepreneurship. Olin has formed academic partnerships with institutions such as Stanford and the University of Illinois to help foster curricular reform, and operates the Initiative for Innovation in Engineering Education, which offers highly participatory faculty workshops that provide a forum for effecting change in engineering pedagogy.

Life’s Bridges – Blueprint to Financial Security

1. Spend less than you earn

In only four of the last 40 years has the US government’s spending been less than its intake — from 1998 to 2001. The tables have turned and the government is spending more than it earns from taxes. Everyone has an opinion on whether to raise taxes, cut spending or both, but somehow the budget will need to balance once more.

2. Stick to your budget

A budget is meaningless if you forget about it or decide to throw it out the window as soon as temptation rears its ugly head. Surprises expenses arise, from natural disasters to an unexpected car repair — but that’s what savings are for. So plan out your budget and then stick to it.

3. Pay off debt

The only way to effectively manage debt is to pay it off regularly without increasing it. That means that when you’re developing a budget to help you spend less than you make, you need to be sure to factor in regular payments of your mortgage, credit card and other debts. It doesn’t matter whether you’re borrowing from China or from Visa.

4. Contribute to retirement

The United States has something in common with many baby boomers — they didn’t prepare for retirement. As retirees begin to outnumber those paying into social security, the government will continue to spend more and make less. If you can afford to, add contributions to a retirement fund to your budget. If you can’t, pay off those debts then funnel those regular payments into your nest egg.

5. Invest

To the average consumer, investing looks almost like a lottery — without the benefits of actual randomness. But you don’t have to dabble in day-trading to make it happen: a few long-term investments will traditionally pay off. As for the government, any expenditure is an investment: funding for the military (for our safety), for education (for our children) and infrastructure (for jobs and economy).

After focusing exclusively on the enthusiast golf market for the last several years, golfersadvice.com has announced the launch of a new website targeting “very infrequent golfers.”

“While the average golfing enthusiast plays about 20 rounds a year, the vast majority of golfers manage to only squeeze in between five and seven rounds of golf in an entire year,” said new projects editor Mark Dunn, formally of the Golf Tips Magazine Publishing Group. “We felt this was a significant segment of the golfing audience that has been virtually ignored by mainstream publications and websites until now.”

Dunn believes that the economic downturn, along with today’s hectic lifestyles, have chipped away at the number of rounds people get to play each year. “In today’s world, most parenting couples have trouble finding time for each other, let alone carving out five or six hours on the weekend to play a round of golf. And that’s what this new website is all about – a fast-read, online destination for golfers who basically have no time for golf.”

While Dunn says the new website will share many similarities with its consumer golfersadvice.com counterpart, including new products, golf tips, and selected event results – the site will also differ in several important ways.

“The vast majority of our readers follow the sport in a very limited way,” he said. “They watch the majors, but don’t even think about swinging a golf club, or buying a golf tips magazine, unless they’ve been invited to participate in a company tournament, or our going on vacation. Our goal is to quickly bring the infrequent golfer up to speed on the sport, while providing them with a number of two-minute instructional videos designed to serve as quick refresher tips before their event.”

For Greg Steven, a software engineer in Southern California, a website for infrequent golfers makes perfect sense. “Honestly, I don’t even think about golf until some type of tournament comes up at work,” said Steven, who has four kids and precious little time for golf. “I literally have to ‘dig out’ my golf clubs from out from under a stack of boxes in my garage. They’ve been sitting there that long, that some of my golf balls have literally turned yellow.”

Stevens says he appreciates a website that quickly catches him up on the game so he speak intelligently on the subject at a company event. “I want to get caught up without having to wade through tons of stories and advertising,” he said. “For me, a couple of good tips and a bit of golf news is all I need.”

Dun believes that infrequent golfers are an important part of the golf industry, despite the limited amount of money they spend on the sport. “However, they’re also at a distinct disadvantage when they finally do get out to golf, and often worried about embarrassing themselves on the course due to a lack of practice,” he says. “That’s why we have a number of short, two-minute instructional videos to serve as mini-refresher courses that cover the basic fundamentals and simple swing thoughts.”
